Portara Ensemble Presents: Darrell Grant & Friends
City Winery
Wed, Feb 13 8:00 pm

In celebration of Black History Month, Portara Ensemble presents jazz pianist and composer Darrell Grant with renowned drummer Brian Blade, saxophonist Rahsaan Barber, and cellist Cremaine Booker. The jazz and gospel-inspired evening culminates in Grant’s Step by Step: The Ruby Bridges Suite featuring Portara Ensemble and the TSU Choir directed by Jason Shelton, guest vocalist Connye Florance, and narration by 92Q’s Tony "Majic" Jackson. Norman Rockwell’s image of a six-year-old black girl accompanied by National Guard as she makes her way to school has become one of the iconic symbols of America’s civil rights era. The story of Ruby Bridges, the first African-American child to attend an all-white public elementary school in the American South, is a tale of courage that resonates across generations. Drawing on gospel and spiritual traditions as well as jazz, Grant’s “Step by Step” weaves together music, spoken word, and images to illustrate an emotional portrait of a dramatic time in US history. Proceeds from this event benefit W.O. Smith Community Music School, an organization which makes affordable, quality music instruction available to children from low-income families thereby transforming lives through music.
